The pledge comes at a meeting of Japanese-African investment in Tunisia on Saturday to counter the influence of rival China, which has steadily expanded its economic presence on the continent.

  • The eighth summit of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-8) also comes as Beijing is working to increase its influence on the African continent through its Belt and Road Infrastructure Initiative.
  • About 30 heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit in the capital as the country faces a deepening economic crisis.
  • In a speech, Kishida stressed that Japan would grow with Africa, in stark contrast to China's approach, which critics see as a burden on debt-poor countries.
